Interview With Matt Carlett

Interview With Matt Carlett

Today, I had the pleasure to sit down with a great friend of mine Matt, Carlett. Matt is a genuine guy who honestly cares about others and community. With Matt entering his FOURTH year in the Print On Demand industry, I knew I had to pick his brain and see what all was in there!

Question 1: What is your background, and when did you get started on Print on Demand?

My background is in IT. I spent 13 years in the corporate world for companies or schools doing IT work. Then about 6 years ago I started doing FBA fulltime and that lead me to Print on Demand in 2015. Got serious with it in 2016.

Question 2: When did say okay, I need to take Merch a little more serious?

It was February 2016 about 2 weeks before Leap Day. I decided to put up 2 Leap Day shirts and overnight I had 8 sales. I decided on the spot it was time to take Merch very seriously.

Question 3: What is biggest hurdle you’ve had to cross so far?

There’s a couple. Time and giving up control are 2 I struggle with. Hiring designers is easy. Hiring VAs to do other things is the part I struggle with. I get in my own way sometimes.

Question 4: Long Sleeves, Hoodies, Sweatshirts, are they worth uploading to?

I think they are, especially with the new larger royalty. I upload to everything.

Question 5: What is a major issue you see with new sellers?

Thinking that Merch is passive income and easy. It couldn’t be further from the truth. There was a time when is was easier but now it’s constant work, managing your listings and testing.

Question 6:What is the number #1 piece of advice you’d give a new seller just starting out?

Quality of quantity and research! I know that’s 2 but that’s the biggest piece of advice I would give. Focus on research, research, research. Put those top keywords in your listings without spamming. Make sure you have good quality designs.

Question 7:What are you focusing on in 2019 this far?

Research. It’s my favorite part of doing Merch to be honest. Then either creating high quality designs or having them made.

Question 8: Do you list your shirt designs anywhere else other than Merch?

I do. I have a couple fo Etsy stores and I list on Red Bubble, Tee Public, Society 6, Zazzle, and Spreadshirt.

Question 9: What is one piece of advice you think every person should have about Research?

Niche down. Find those gaps that need to be closed. You can take a huge niche and niche down to find the gold.

Question 10: Are running AMS Ads? If so are they effective?

Do run them on all trending designs. They can be very effective but should be managed constantly. During holidays I will spend hours managing them because you can lose a lot of money very fast. It can become a fulltime job some weeks during a holiday rush.

Question 11: What are your thoughts on KDP (Kindle Direct Publishing)
I love it. I’m working on it now. Taking a break to write this. I think it’s a another great way for us to utilize Amazon to make money.

Jacob thank you for the interviewing me and all the help you’ve provided me with KDP. I really appreciate it.
